How to export with transparent background
Select your artboard and export at your chosen size. Once you're on the export page, select one of the transparent formats (WebM, MOV or GIF).
If your artboard has a background fill, that fill is removed during export.
MOV (transparent) gives you an extra option: Keep toriginal background. This is useful for translucent backgrounds where your background fill is set to partial opacity.
Using transparent video formats
Each format handles the alpha channel differently. Knowing how helps you avoid black backgrounds, hard edges, and halos further down the line.
MOV (ProRes4444): Best for editing and compositing, where quality needs to be preserved. Files are large and take longer to render, so it's a working format rather than one you publish.
WebM: Best for web publication, with the exception of Safari which does not support the alpha channel in WebM.
GIF: Widely accepted and flexible, with one caveat: transparency in a GIF is binary. This means that every pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible, with nothing in between. Soft edges, drop shadows, glows, blurs, or partial opacity effects don't survive and will show up as jagged edges or hard outlines. To ensure fidelity:
Design with flat colors and solid shapes rather than soft effects
Keep edges crisp, since there's no partial opacity to smooth them
Where transparent videos can be used
If you've exported a transparent video but the background is black or grey when you play it elsewhere, it means that the editor or player does not handle alpha channels.
Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro support Jitter's transparent MOV files natively. Import the file directly into your timeline and the transparency will be preserved.
CapCut's official supported formats do not include transparent video imports. The most reliable workaround for CapCut is to export with a green background from Jitter, then use CapCut's Chroma Key tool to remove it.
Transparent videos are not typically accepted on native media players players or social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, or LinkedIn. These platforms flatten transparency to a solid background, almost always black. If that's where your animation is heading, set the background color you want in Jitter and export as MP4 instead for best results.
Do you need transparency?
Transparent exports render more slowly, produce larger files, and are accepted in fewer places.
Choose one when your animation absolutely needs to sit on something you don't control: footage in an editor, a web page, or a colored slide. If you already know what's behind it, set that background in Jitter and export MP4 instead.
