BM-08 Add depth and polish with secondary actions

Episode 8 of Better Motion: Add depth, personality and polish by layering secondary actions on top of your main animation.

Welcome to Better Motion: A video series to help elevate your motion skills, one fix at a time. 🛠️

In this episode, Anaïs shows how secondary actions can take an animation that feels flat and give it depth, personality and polish.

Most people focus on main actions: an image zooms in, a card slides onto the screen, a logo scales up.

Technically, that's enough. But think about an actor performing: the words they say are the main action, while the smile, the raised eyebrow or the hand gesture are what make the performance feel real.

Motion works the same way. The primary action communicates the idea. The secondary action adds personality, depth and polish.

Layer animations with secondary actions in Jitter

  1. Animate your main element first, the action that carries the message.

  2. Layer a supporting animation on a related element, like a mask, a background shape, or a small reaction after the main move lands.

  3. Give it a slightly different speed or a small delay so the two motions don't move in lockstep.

  4. Keep it subtle. The difference between good motion and great motion is often invisible.

💡 Tip: If you want a more sophisticated look, AI Superagents can generate secondary effects in seconds, giving you a polished starting point to refine however you like.
