Fix robotic animations with the right easing curve

In episode 3 of this series, Anaïs explains the nuances between different easing curves and presets and where to best use them.

If your animations feel stiff, the easing curve is usually why. If your easing curve is set to Linear, motion moves at a constant speed with no ramp up or slow down.

Nothing in the real world moves that way, so linear motion tends to read as artificial 🤖.

Tips to choose the right easing preset

Jitter's easing presets are built to match common motion needs:

  • Slow down: Best for elements entering the frame. The element arrives with speed and eases to a stop, similar to a car pulling into a parking spot.

  • Accelerate: Best for elements leaving the frame. The element picks up speed as it exits.

  • Smooth or Natural: best for elements moving from one position to another without entering or exiting the frame.

  • Linear: works well for elements that never stop, like a spinner or a looping background.

To apply a preset, select the animation on your layer and choose the easing that matches the motion type:
