Applying a displacement effect

Add organic, wave-like effects to your layers in Jitter

Written by Karen

Displacement in Jitter is a powerful custom animation technique you can use to create fluid motion, organic transitions, reveal animations, and ambient backgrounds.

To apply a displacement effect:

  1. Select the layer you'd like to animate

  2. In the property panel, switch to the Animate tab

  3. Click Add animation > Custom > Displacement

  4. Set the Initial value by adjusting Amplitude, Offset, and Repeat to define where the distortion starts

  5. Below that, set your target values for the same controls. This is where the distortion will end up after the animation plays.

  6. Set the Direction to Horizontal, Vertical, or Both.

  7. Adjust Duration and Easing to control how the transition feels.

πŸ’‘ Tip: For subtle and natural-looking motion, keep amplitude values low and use a gentle easing curve. Higher amplitude with both directions enabled creates a more dramatic, liquid effect.
